Epilogue

I thought it was interesting that in the end Alba didn't want revenge on Esteban Garcia. Most of her family members carried anger and hatred for their enemies all their lives, but Alba the one who in my opinion suffered and lost the greatest quickly lost her anger, and moved on in life. She is by far my favorite character. I admire her strength and also her vulnerability, it makes her more like any girl even if she does have green hair and a crazy eccentric family. Also, I loved her outlook on the future, as she states on p.(432), memory is fragile and the space of a single life is brief, passing so quickly that we never get a chance to see the relationship between events; we cannot gauge the consequences of our acts, and we believe in the fiction of past, present, and future, but it may also be true that everything happens simultaneously." This is my favorite sentence in the entire book. Alba has a greater outlook on life and that there was a purpose for every event that took place. It's also sort of an empowering sentence in my opinion that ties the events of the book together.

What I liked about the epilogue was the characters that Alba meets. I liked how Rojas was caring to the supposed criminals and how he tried to help them out even when they asked for death. Another character I liked was the old women in the slum, with her many children, who went and rescued Alba after she was dumped off. I think in a way she was like an angel to Alba because she showed her that even though there was an evil dictator and evil people in the world, she still had her spirit. Alba realizes this when she says "you ran an anormous risk rescueing me" and the women just smiles. :)

So is our faith in humanity restored in Alba? Yes, she has every right to want revenge, but what does she choose to do instead? Where does she end up?

And let's talk more about the quote Cassie mentions - what greater themes does this quote and Alba's choices illuminate about the novel as a whole?

I was extremely nervous how the book would end by the 14th chapter, but the book ended very well! The ending summed up every question I had about the house, Esteban, how Alba returned, and it even talked again about Barabas. It was interesting listening to how Alba put the notebooks and events together to make The House of the Spirits. I was happy that they fixed up the house as if there was life again in it and Allende told Esteban's story about how he came about to find Alba. I was upset when Esteban died, but I was happy for him and the life he lived. As for Barrabas, I'm happy that the book started and ended with "Barrabas came to us by sea" (1 & 433). It was a clever way to put the book together. I think of Barrabas as a character that was able to be in everyone's lives in the story even after he was turned into a rug. In a way I think the reader is sort of like Barrabas because we were there from the beginning of the story to the end, the same time Barrabas comes into the story seeing everything that is taking place and meeting every one in the family. I don't know, just an idea.
Well written story though!

I was rather happy how the book ended. The epilogue did a great job summing up all of the unawswerd questions any reader would have. The epilogue also filled in the blanks of what happened in previous chapters. Without the epilogue, I would have hated how it would have ended. The last sentence of chapter 14 would have just been a huge cliff hanger and the reader would have been expecting a second book. The thing that I enjoyed the most, which Janel already mentioned, was how the book ended and started (1 & 433). I thought that it was very creative and unique way to start and end a book. It makes you want to turn back to page one and continue reading.

Your Welcome,
Travis

I have to say that I agree with everyone that I absolutely loved how the book began and ended with the same entry from Clara's story of Barrabas. It gave it the full circle that I admire in a story. Through the story I had felt sympathy for Esteban. Through every terrible thing he had done from rage and contempt as he raped women, beat his wife and child, burned the homes of his workers, and even set in events that led to the kidnapping and torture of his beloved granddaughter, he had always showed his human side in the story in some way, with the most common outlet being regret for his actions. It gave the reader a heavy feeling when Esteban reunites with Alba and sees her hand, but also when he displays rage and tears as he obviously blames himself for letting it happen ''And then we kissed each otherand when he saw my hand he began to cry and curse and smash his cane against the furniture, the way he used to'' (423). The book did a wonderful job telling the story of Esteban's story and development in a way that really moved me.

Is Esteban an unlikely hero?

Janel...I love your interest in Barabas...you are the very first student ever who has taken the time and effort to really think through his significance in the novel. This is the kind of analysis I hope to see all the time. Nice job!

I was very happy with the end of the story. It was a pleasant ending. Transito Soto is a hero in my book. I admire her for helping Esteban in his troubled times. I am happy that Alba never told Esteban that she was pregnant before he died. I think if he knew he would not have had such a peaceful death. I liked how the author set the story up like a cycle of people's lives. It goes through 3 generations.

"If you want, I'll tell you my story so you can write it down" (426), is a funny quote to me, becasue even though its not Alba saying it, it refers to her because the book in its essence is the story of Alba and her relatives before her. It is a journal of her life and others put together. This is book was a good novel to read to help you understand people in other countries. Even though it was fiction its true in a way.

This quote captured my attention because I find it to be an intriguing thought, and it also explains why Clara decided to write every detail of her life down. Alba also came to the realization that in order to recognize why events take place and how they all become connected that she must write everything down as her grandmother had.

It was nice to finally learn that Alba was the person narrating the story when it was in third person. She is using both her grandmother's notes and her grandfather to help her learn the full history of her family. "Before I put the puzzle together, it all seemed incomprehensible to me" (432). This helped her figure out why some of the things that happened to her, such as why Esteban Garcia was so cruel to her.

I have to agree with Autumn, the end of this book was really nice. It all tied together very nicely and everything is pretty much explained to you. I was surprised because I thought that we'd be left with a cliff hanger which usually happens in most books.

The last conflicts are finally settled. Esteban and Alba were reunited. Esteban passes away, and Alba was found out to be pregnant. The only character who has remained in the story since the beginning is Esteban, who dies from old age, which brings the book to a close. Also Alba's unborn child shows some sort of motif because this ending is really a beginning of something new. Its the beginning based on many facts. The epilogue shows how the story came to be written. The end of Esteban's life and the beginning of Alba's pregnancy are also the beginning of their co-narration of the events leading up to that moment.
